Frank Capra  Is God on the side of my characters? In it's a Wonderful Life, I showed an angel who hadn't won his wings because he was such a lousy angel. But the characters themselves had an idealism within them that eventually won out. They reached for something they had inside, and they came up with a handful of courage and wit, and beat their adversaries with it. Not with prayer. The only prayer you'll find is when Stewart goes into that saloon and he says, ``Show me the way, God. I'm at the end of my rope." He just barely says it when he gets punched in the nose. Then he says, ``That's what I get for praying." I'm wise enough to know that you can't make a religious statement or a political one out of a film. People go into a theater to be entertained, titillated, inspired. But they don't go in to hear a sermon. You've got to dramatize whatever idea you have with people, not through sermons. Audiences will not buy it. But they will buy a human being who's trying to do the right thing for his fellowman, and they'll cheer like hell for him if he's got odds to win out. They will buy that. They'll cheer for the good guy, for the guy who's got compassion, forgiveness in his heart, for that good samaritan. Those kinds of people counteract all the meanness there is in the world. They're idealists. They will go down fighting for a lost cause, an you cheer for them. That's the closest I can get to heaven.

has always adhered to the road less taken, or never taken, such as pulling his Paul Gauguin and deserting his film career. Or speaking out for Native American rights at the Oscar ceremonies. Or, cynically, taking three million, for a few minutes of  Superman and running. That's probably more per minute than any- one else has ever made for acting.
